Suhum- Rabies Kills Four

Four children have died of rabies at the Suhum Municipal Government Hospital in the Eastern Region since the beginning of this year, after they had been bitten by dogs infected with the disease.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Health Directorate and the Veterinary Services have launched the 2014 Rabies Vaccination Exercise to immunize all dogs in the municipality.

The Suhum Municipal Health Director, Dr. Samuel Agyeman Boateng, told DAILY GUIDE that the Municipal Assembly had disbursed money to enable the Directorate to carry out the exercise so as to prevent any further deaths.

This was confirmed by the Suhum Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr. Kudjo Dekpo, who told this reporter that an amount of GHc300,000 had been given for the exercise.

“As we speak, people who have been bitten by rabies-infected dogs are receiving treatment at the hospital,” Dr. Agyeman Boateng disclosed in a short interview, adding that the immunization exercise was expected to end early next month.

He grieved over the death of the four children and urged all dog owners in the municipality to take advantage of the ongoing vaccination exercise and immunize their pets.

According to him, they (the dog owners) were expected to pay a fee of GHc4 per pet towards the vaccination, adding that the Municipal Information Services van had been deployed to adequately inform the inhabitants about the exercise.

Dr. Boateng warned that any dog owner who failed to send his or her pet for vaccination would be arrested by the police and prosecuted at the law court.

A source told this reporter that for the past four years no vaccination had taken place in the municipality due to financial constraints.
