KKD Denied Bail, Charged With Rape.
Media icon, Kwasi Kyei Darkwa (KKD) who has been accused of raping a 19-year-old girl has been denied bail by the Kaneshie District Magistrate Court in Accra on Tuesday.
The renowned broadcaster was detained after he was picked up by the police at the African Regent hotel on Sunday over alleged rape allegations.
He has officially been charged with rape and was asked to reappear on January 8, 2015.
A bail application filed by KKD’s lawyer, Nana Asante Bediatuo was opposed by the court presided over by Adwoa Akyaamaa, insisting that a rape charge is not a ‘bailable’ offence.
In an interview with Accra-based radio station, Joy Fm, Lawyer Bediatuo expressed his disappointment at the court’s decision to refuse the radio personality bail.
“I’m disappointed because, frankly, the facts as adduced by the prosecution do not establish on the face that indeed a crime has been committed,” Bediatuo told Joy FM.
Kwasi Kyei Darkwa was arrested on Sunday, December 27, 2014 for allegedly sexually assaulting a 19-year-old Ewuraffe Orleans Thompson at the African Regent hotel.
Police said was being investigated for “sexual assault,” an offence which doesn’t exist in Ghana’s criminal justice system.
The CEO of Finest Productions however denied the allegations, insisting that he had a “consensual sex” with the complainant and not rape.
According to him, he even had a drink with the lady after the act but was later arrested by the police after two gentlemen he suspects have a relationship with the lady lodged a complaint against him.
KKD faces between 5 to 20 years of jail sentences if found guilty.
