Tema Medical Stores On Fire.
Fire service personnel are fighting a fire outbreak at the Central Medical Stores located at the Tema Heavy Industrial Area. According to eye witnesses, the fire started at about 10am.
The Central Medical Stores (CMS) which belongs to the Ministry of Health is the depot for medical supplies in Ghana. The center supplies drugs to hospitals and pharmacies across the country.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown. Personnel from the Ghana Fire Service have been battling with inferno for more than eight hours.
Outbreak is a disaster
The Director General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Ebenezer Appiah Denkyira in an interview has revealed that the ravaging of the CMS is a huge blow to the health sector. He said the drug supply in the country will be affected by the fire outbreak.
“What it means is that we are going to run short of medications at facilities because that is the place where we store all [medications].
“So maybe we may quickly have to bring our partners, both local and abroad to be able to estimate how much we need and then see whether we can procure items locally,” Dr. Denkyira told Accra-based radio station, Joy FM.
In another interview, the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Health, Tony Goodman told Joy FM the destruction of the center by the inferno will also affect the fight against Ebola.
He revealed that medical equipment and medicines supplied by the World Health Organisation (WHO) were all housed at the Ghana Health Service together with the country’s medications.
