Gyan must start taking penalties for Ghana says George Afriyie
Management committee chairman of the Black Stars of Ghana, Mr. George Afriyie has called on Ghana’s captain Asamoah Gyan to start taking penalties for Ghana.
The captain of the Black Stars self-exiled himself from taking penalties for the Black Stars after he was severely criticized for missing a last gasp penalty in the 2010 World Cup against Uruguay and against Zambia in AFCON 2012.
In the just ended 2015 AFCON, Asamoah Gyan was substituted when the final game between Ghana and Ivory Coast got settled on penalty shoot-outs which Ghana lost.
After the game, many soccer pundits said the Al Ain goal poacher should have taken part in the penalty shoot-outs.
Black Stars management committee chairman, Mr George Afriyie has stated that Asamoah Gyan must start taking penalties for Ghana.
“I think we need to convince him to change his mind because with Gyan – 10 out of 9 times, he will score,” Afriyie said on a Ghana Television sports programme.
“It is a psychological trauma he went through and he decided not to take penalties again,” the Black Stars chief explained.
He further revealed that “When Kwesi Appiah took the job I think Asamoah [Gyan] was on a break and myself, the wife of the late Sly Tetteh went over to speak to his [Gyan’s] late mum [to convince him to return to the national team].
