‘Our game plan was to get an early goal’ says Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan
Black Stars of Ghana captain, Asamoah Gyan has stated that their game plan in their Afcon qualifier against Mauritius was to get an early goal.
Ghana opened their 2017 Afcon qualifier by mauling Mauritius by seven goals to one at the Accra sports stadium on Sunday with goals coming from Christian Atsu, Asamoah Gyan, Jordan Ayew, Jeffrey Schlupp and David Accam and a consolation goal from Sophie J.
And the captain of the four time Africa champions, Asamoah Gyan says, their game plan was to get an early goal.
“We came into the game to score an early goal and that is what we got, playing a team like Mauritius you need to score in the first 15 minutes and take it over from there. The first half was brilliant everything went well and the second half we had couple of chances especially me which i could have had my hatrick but it is part of football and we won 7-1 the team has done an incredible job”, Gyan said in a post-match interview.
Gyan admitted that in some stages of the game they got complacent but they did that in other to preserve some energy in the game.
“In some stages we got complacent because it got to a time we had control over the game, we dominated the game and most of the players were tired and we have to just clam down and make sure we possess the ball and after some minutes we just starts pressing again that was our game plan”.
He concluded – “Is a very good start for the Black Stars and I would like to congratulate everybody and it is not over because this is the first game and we shouldn’t be swollen headed and keep on working hard and seven goals is incredible and I hope it continues”.
