Ghana pip Rwanda in Kigali
Ghana beat Rwanda 1-0 in 2017 Afcon qualifier game played on Saturday at the Amahoro sports stadium in Kigali.
The Black Stars went into the game to avenged their 2003 loss to the Amavubi while the East Africa side aim was to consolidate their rich football history over the four time Africa champions.
The beauty of the game on the day was never seen due to the poor state of the Amahoro pitch as both teams had it difficult to control the ball.
But it was Ghana who dominated the host from the blast of the whistle, the West Africa failed to let their dominance count on the score sheet as the first half ended goalless.
In the second half Ghana upped their game and mounted intense pressure on the host and in the 85th minute brilliant free-kick by Mubarak Wakaso won the day for the Black Stars as the game ended 1-0.
After the game, head coach of Rwanda Jonny Mckinstry hailed his side’s performance in the game despite their home loss.
“I am disappointed we didn’t get anything from the game but I must salute my players, for they gave their best to get something from Ghana but we just couldn’t get a shot on goal, but all I am happy with the effort of the players.”
He added, “We had a clear game plan and it worked so well until late in the game when we make one mistake and paid for it. When you play against very good teams likes Ghana you need to be alert the whole game because you give them one chance you will be punished.”
The next qualifier will be played on March 25, 2016 when Rwanda travel to Mauritius and Ghana host Mozambique.
